About the Big Island Ballroom Dance Club

BIBDC Handbook                          

The club was founded in 2007, and is a non profit, tax exempt organization with  bylaws. BIBDC offers a variety of dance classes and social dance events. From American smooth dances like the Waltz, Tango, and Foxtrot to lively styles such as Cha-Cha and East Coast Swing, the diverse curriculum covers it all. The club also organizes regular dance socials that provide members with opportunities to practice, socialize, and enjoy the vibrant ballroom dance community in Hilo.

The Bolero is a slow, expressive, and romantic Latin dance often called the "slow rumba". It is a popular wedding first dance.

Country Two step


The Country Two-Step is a popular, traveling partner dance performed to country-western music.

Yes, we offer beginner-friendly classes designed to teach the fundamentals of ballroom dancing in a supportive environment.


No, you do not need a partner to join our classes. We encourage singles as well as couples to participate and we often rotate partners during practice.


Yes, participation is limited to adults only.


Our classes are held at the Church of the Holy Cross, located at 440 W. Lanikaula St., Hilo, HI 96720.


You can sign up for classes at the door. While it is preferable to sign up and start classes at the beginning of each 8 weeke session, you ae welcome to join at any time.


We recommend comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement and dance shoes or smooth-soled shoes suitable for the dance floor. No shorts, tank tops or rubber slippers, please.


For special events and showcases, we recommend semi-formal to formal attire suitable for ballroom dancing to enhance the experience.


We teach a variety of American standard ballroom dance styles including Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Bolero, Rumba, Bachata, Cha-Cha, Samba, Salsa, Mambo, Merengue, and East and West Coast Swing, as well as Hustle and Night Club Two Step.
